IOHI Surprise Shower!

Back from vacation!

Well we just about have everything unpacked and all of the boxes out of the house! I think I remember saying a couple of weeks ago “moving in is a lot easier than moving out”. Now I’m not so sure!

There are so many little things we still want to do, but will have to save for our weekend projects. We painted the master bath – no let me reiterate – we sanded, cleaned, primed, primed, painted, touched up – the master bath! There’s not a lick of royal blue or silver to be found! Oh – and never give a paint brush to a girl with a touch of OCD. Lesson learned!

Alec cleaned, filled and balanced the hot tub. Last night, we couldn’t figure out what to do next on our ever present To Do list, so we soaked in the hot tub which was really more like lukewarm tub. Alec thought it was fine, but 84 degree water does not a hot tub make! The jets felt nice and the lights gave us a funky show, but it was COLD when we got out!

The furkids and I finally talked Alec into turning on the air conditioner last weekend. We were just dragging around and panting while Mr. Thrifty was staying cool as a cucumber thinking of all the $$ he was saving on the electric bill! UGH! We are all in much better spirits now!

We got a few new pieces of furniture including a bed. This bed is crazy high – I think it hits me just below my chest. Believe me, there is no graceful way for me to get in this thing! I have a little step ladder that I move room to room (everything is so high in this house!). I think I need to set it up next to the bed or dig out the wiener kids’ ramp!

I’ll try to post new-and-improved house pictures later.

Our New Baby!

Add featherbaby to our crew of furbabies! The other day, Alec discovered a nest of baby blue jays in one of our Bradford pear trees in the back yard. Well, they weren't exactly babies! They looked to be about 25 years old, jobless and still living at home!

Sunday morning we woke up to yet another Oklahoma flash flood with hail and everything. When we looked in out back flowerbed, we found one of the baby blue jays laying on the ground by a bush. I was sure he was hurt, but Alec assured me that he was just trying out his wings. Mango (lab furkid/ honorary wienerkid)didn't help much by immediately running up to the baby. I think she learned her leason when momma and daddy blue jay started dive bombing her! Regardless, the puppers were banned from the back yard for the day and only allowed out under close supervision.

The baby blue jay bounced around the yard all day trying out his wings. He would hunker way down then give it his all to get up on the bottom horizontal slat on the fence. It was so cute! Mom and dad were always close by to make sure he was safe. Mom even brought him some food to help get his strength up. We watched the little guy late into the evening and he looked just exhaused. There he was, in the middle of the yard, no where to go. His brothers and sisters had all flown away.

About 2am, I woke up to thunder and alas another flash flood! I told Alec I was worried about our little feathered friend. I began crying at the thought of him out in the middle of the yard getting soaked. I said I hope he doesn't drown! Alec said nothing. He got out of bed and headed toward the kitchen! I grabbed a bath towel and followed.

Alec went out into the pouring rain, at 2am and found the baby in the yard right where we had last seen him last night. He gently layed a tea towel over the baby bird and placed him on the bath towel I had laid out on the patio. That's the man I married. That's my husband!

This morning we moved the baby bird up to our patio table to keep him away from the furkids. His mom stopped by a minute ago and brought him a little breakfast and our little guy is already trying out his wings.

PS - I'm a bit worried that Berman may have lost his "hound dog-ness." Yesterday he was within 2 inches of the bird and didn't even notice! Geesh!

Tour de 'Tuck!

Today we decided to rent bikes to take us around to the sites of Nantucket.

The cobblestone streets were a bit challenging and the traffic was certainly picking up. You could definately tell that the high season was just around the corner! So we got out of town and ventured out to some beaches. We first stopped at Brandt Point one more time to video the spot where we were married yesterday. We had hoped to capture the cermony on film, but the rain and wind made it impossible.

We then headed over to the Jetties Beach which is one of the nicer swimming areas. On our way there, we saw a deer run right across the street in front of us! An older local man was riding his bike too and rode with us to the beach. He was really nice and he's a real estate developer on the island. And you will never believe what he wanted to talk about! Oklahoma football! Of all things! After he left, we parked our bikes and walked to the shore. This beach is actually on Nantucket Sound - the area between Nantucket and "the main land" as it's known around here.

We looked for more cool shells and rocks to take back home. Of course we had to take some newlywed pictures!

Then it was time for lunch so we went back in to town. My stomach was still upset so of course we feasted on...what else...more seafood! We had a bowl of clam chowder and a lobster roll (kinda like tuna salad but with lobster instead).

After lunch we took a bike trail out to Surfside Beach to see the Atlantic Ocean one more time. It was quite a trek across the island and we managed to time our trip, which went right through the school zone, just as school was letting out! The locals are super nice and patient with silly tourists on bikes! I'm sure my legs will be sooo sore tomorrow -they were on fire today! The trail to the ocean is a steady uphill climb. UGH! But once we got there...

We rode back in to town, dropped off our bikes then sat out on our balcony and watched our new neighbor getting his boat ready for the summer season.

Then it was time for a nap - dirty feet and all!

Our Big Day

It's 2 am here and I'm wide awake. My stomach is upset. I thought it was butterflies, but now I think it was all the fish including the raw oysters we were so inclined to try last night! So here's what went down on our Big Day!

Tuesday began overcast and I was sure the clouds would burn away by mid morning as they do back home. But no such luck. We headed out after breakfast to see more of this little island.

There's a children's beach just about 200 feet from our hotel. The sand is really soft and there are very few shells. The beach has a playground and what looks like an outdoor theater.

We wandered into town, still hopeful the clouds would part in time for our nuptials. We stopped by the flower shop to check on my bouquet and it was perfect! They even used lily of the valley which I had previously been told wouldn't be available. Yea!
The cobblestone streets, although quite charming, can be very tricky to maneuver!

This mural of a compass dates back to the 1920's. Alec is certain he's pointing to Broken Arrow!

After wandering up and down the same streets, we decided to stop in at the visitor's center to see what they could recommend for the afternoon. They suggested an island tour. We sat by the wharf and scarfed down some pizza from Steamship Pizza while we waited for Val from Val's Tours to pick us up.

We shared Val's minivan with a family from Japan. They were very nice, but I don't think spoke English very well so Val focused most of her information on us.

She took us by the oldest house on the island which dates back to 1686! We also stopped by the Old Mill which is a windmill from the 1700s that still works! In the summer, there is a children's class where the kids mill their own flour then bake bread!

We then headed to Surfside to see the Atlantic Ocean! Surfside is on the southern coast of 'Tuck. The ocean was amazing! The roaring waves sounded like semi's on the BA or something! I'm not a strong swimmer so water has always been my nemesis and the ocean was certainly no exception! It was just so breathtaking. My eyes immediately filled with tears from the awe of it all.

We went to 'Sconset next to see what was once known as Millionaire's Row but is now known as Billionaire's Row! We saw the summer homes of the Duponts, the Roosevelts, Bill Belichick and Jack Welsh (the former CEO of GE). This side of the island is eroding away at an alarming rate! Many of the homes have been moved from one side of the road to the other. Even the old Sankaty lighthouse had to be moved back 500 feet a couple of years ago!

As we headed back into town, the rain started picking up. We picked up my bouquet then decided to get back to the hotel to start getting ready. By the time we were ready, the rain had let up. It was still very overcast and the temperature had dropped from 52 to 48, but we were determined to have our beach wedding by the 2nd oldest lighthouse in he country!

We walked down to the beach under an umbrella and met Catherine Stover the Justice of the Peace. When the photographer arrived, we got started. The vows Catherine read were absolutely beautiful. As the ceremony went on, the rain picked up and we couldn't tell what were tears and what were raindrops! Our feet and hands were numb from the cold and our hair was completely soaked. After the ceremony, the photographer burst out "That was the most romantic thing I've ever seen!"

How lucky we were to have God's tears of joy raining down on us on our Big Day!

He's kissed his bride!

Good morning! We're getting married today!

This morning I woke up determined to see the sunrise and get a couple of pics. It wasn't until I went back to bed and checked the clock that I found out the sun rises around here at 4:30 in the morning! That's 3:30 OK time! Alec has given up trying to explain time zones to me. Hopefully I can convince him to go to the beach tomorrow morning so I can get better pics.

Yesterday Alec went and got our complimentary coffee and danishes from the hotel library. I couldn't figure out what kind of pastries these were. He told me they were fig. I was like "fig?!?" and he asked "haven't you ever had a fig newton?" Uhm... no - I'm a cookie girl, not a newton girl! Any who, I thought, well if this is what these fancy Yankees eat for breakfast, then I'll give it a shot! It was funny - fig tasted a lot like chocolate. I thought, well, I'll make myself believe I'm eating chocolate to get through this thing. Well, low and behold, it turns out they WERE chocolate! Someone thought he was being quite the jokester!

After breakfast, we went to Town Hall to apply for our marriage license. The process was so easy! They didn't even need to see our birth certificates, drivers licenses or anything!

We then took a stroll down to Brandt Point lighthouse.

The sand was so warm and soft, and there were shells everywhere! We started a pretty good collection! Alec was wearing tennis shoes, but I had on slip-ons so I thought I'd stick my toe in the water. Brrrrr!!!

Good thing we didn't pack our swimsuits!

After we dropped our shells off at the hotel and I rinsed off my sandy feet, we headed to town for some shopping and lunch. We stopped in the Chamber for map and a lunch recommendation. We decided to eat lunch at the Tavern on the Wharf. We split a bowl of clam chowder (YUMMY!) and a "catch of the day" sandwich. We think it was scrod - which sounds gross but it's not. Here we are after lunch - right on the wharf!

We meandered around town a bit more then headed back to the hotel to relax a bit on the balcony. The workers below were busy moving boats into the harbor in preparation for the upcoming holiday weekend and the official beginning of the season in 'Tuck!

Then it was time for our 4:00 complimentary Port and cheese. Ooh-la-la!

After a nice long nap, we headed out for dinner. We wanted something low key so we decided on Cap'n Tobey's Chowder House. I had a cup of lobster bisque and stuffed Quohog clams. Alec had a steak and cheese sandwich. We were entertained by the locals going nuts over the Red Sox game on the TV. People here are crazy for their Sox and Celtics!

We got back to the hotel and soaked in our experiences for the day. Oh - and that's a full moon behind us, not a UFO. I'm still trying to figure out my camera!

And now it's time to begin "Our Big Day!" Alec tried not to look at me this morning (you know, bad luck) but that didn't last long.

Planes Trains Automobiles...and a Boat!

We finally made it! After 1 car, 1 shuttle, 3 planes, 1 tram, another car, a taxi, a boat and another shuttle, we made it to The White Elephant Hotel in Nantucket!

Our adventure began in Tulsa when it was obvious to everyone that neither of us had flown in a long time. I freaked when I had to take off my flip flops and stand BARE FOOTED while my $2 Old Navy flops went through the x-ray thing. Then of course we were carrying toilettries in my purse and both of our suitcases that were not properly packed. Apparently everything has to be in Zip-Loc bags now. Alec lost a big bottle of hair gel so that's first on our list today!

When we landed in Minneapolis/St. Paul, we were dropped off at one end of the airport then had to depart at the opposite end - and only had about 30 minutes to work with! This is when the tram came in to play!

Our connection in Detroit was the same way, but luckily we had about an hour to work with so we managed to cram down some sandwhiches. Apparently snacks are no longer complimentary on an airplane - they cost $3!

When we arrived in Providence, we had to rent a car to drive the 1 1/2 hour trip to Hyannis. We asked for a midsize and got a PT Cruiser! Not that there's anything wrong with that, but come on! A PT Cruiser?!?! Here's Alec filling up the PT once we arrived in Hyannis. Gas was $3.89 a gallon!

We dropped off the PT Cruiser at the airport in Hyannis then grabbed a taxi to the Hyline fast ferry. By the time we got on the ferry, the sky was completely overcast and it was drizzly. The local were dressed for winter! They had on sweaters and coats and even stocking caps! I wore my capri pant & 3/4 lenghth jog suit and flip flops! Alec had on jeans and a t-shirt. Who looked like tourists?

Here we are on the ferry enjoying brews from a local brewery (they weren't that good!).

When we pulled into the harbor, we saw Brandt Point Lighthouse! I ran up the stairs to the top of the ferry (and in the cold drizzle) and tried to take pictures. I asked a local (at least I thought he was local by his accent) if that was Brandt Point and he said it was. I said "That's where I'm getting married on Tuesday!" He shook my hand and congratulated me.

When we finally got to our hotel, we were cold, wet, tired and hungry! We ran down to the grill and got some fried clams, a crab cake and a couple of Whales Tails (Nantucket's own brew!).

Before bed I was upset that maybe we made a mistake! I mean, where was our fun New England beach vacation? It was so cold and rainy here! Alec just wanted to go to sleep.

But then this morning, I woke up to birds singing and the sun blazing through the windows.

It's going to be a beautiful day!

Oh yeah! And we're getting married!

UGH! We've been so caught up in this whole house thing that we've kinda forgotten about the wedding! Anyway - we leave on Sunday morning to arrive in the 'Tuck that evening.

Monday we'll apply for our license, then apply for an exception to the 3-day waiting period, then pick up our license! We'll do some site seeing and what not that day.

Tuesday...well - not sure what we're doing that day, but at 5pm, we're marrying on the beach by Brandt Point lighthouse. I'm not sure who's helping me get in my dress. I hope Lou, the name of the concierge, is short for Lougene or Louise! Maybe she can help! We have reservations at the fancy schmancy restaurant at the White Elephant that evening.

Wednesday and on and on - site seeing and being married!

I hope we've not outdone ourselves this week and just want to sleep next week! That's an awful expensive nap!

Pictures to come...promise (not like that moving madness picture business!)

Oh - upper 50's next week in the 'Tuck. Yea! No bathing suit! Yea!

Later - no internet at home...last post before the Big Day!!!

dum dum da-dum...

Good news!

We are now the proud owners of a lovely 4 bedroom 2 ½ bath home in Broken Arrow / South Tulsa.

Alec packed and loaded a moving truck all day Monday and I helped some Monday night. Then it was mattress on the floor time! Ugh! My back still hurts! This girl needs her box springs! We woke up bright and early Tuesday morning and loaded more stuff. Who knew we had so much stuff?!?! The HUGE moving truck and both of our cars were completely crammed full! We dropped off the truck at the new house and patiently (yeah right!) waited.

The first closing was for the sell of my house. After the close, we realized we were homeless! Not a good feeling at all! Since we had no where to go, we just went to work and waited until the next close at 4pm.

The second closing went smooth and quick! Alec and I figured out that if we angle each paper just right, we could sign and date them at the same time! Talk about teamwork!

We immediately headed to our new home hoping to get the truck unloaded before the storms came, but no such luck. Luckily for me, my job was to unpack the boxes so I stayed dry! But everyone else got pretty soaked!

Poor Alec looks like he’s been in a few rumbles or something. He’s bruised head to toe and I think has found muscles he never knew he had! His mom and dad and friend MC all stopped by to lend a hand...or two! THANK GOODNESS!!!

We managed to get the truck unloaded, the bed set up and most of the kitchen put in place. We also had our new refrigerator and washer and dryer installed. We were 5 minutes too late and missed the cable guy so no TV for a few days. Oh well…I think we have plenty to keep us busy!

If you’re in our area, feel free to stop by and unpack a box! We'll owe you a hot tub soak sometime in the future!

Move-In Madness pictures to come…
